You either can’t wait to watch the Olympics every night, or can’t wait until the closing ceremonies are done. Or maybe you just love certain Olympic sports and loathe others. My husband has a strong opinion on this matter. ;)
One of the things I most admire about the Olympic games is the absolute drive, determination, and dedication of all of the athletes. Whether it be their pursuit from the time they are young children, or later in life (like Kristin Armstrong, the cyclist in her 40’s), these individuals have chosen to, like the Nike slogan says, “Just Do It!”. They are unwavering in their pursuit to be the best in the world, and if not that, the absolute best they can be.
We really all have at least a little Simone Biles or Michael Phelps inside each of us. Maybe you aren’t swimming or vaulting, but I bet you throw your heart, soul, and dedication into raising your family, growing a garden, taking care of animals, volunteering at an organization you have passion for, helping other people, the list goes on for miles.
Maybe you don’t have their athletic ability, and never will, but you’ve got a body, a mind, a heart, and a soul, able to do day after day what matters to you. I’m sure both Simone and Michael have days when the alarm goes off and they just don’t feel like going to the gym or the pool. You are no different. But they get up and go, and you do too. It might not be your best day or your strongest day, and it might be really freaking hard, but you still show up.
And that’s what matters anyway. That you do show up. And you continue to show up for your life in ways that matter to you.
So what if you’re never an Olympic athlete on the top podium with a gold medal around your neck. That may not be what you want. But as long as you are living your life the way you want to live it, then guess what? You’ve already won the gold.
You are the first, and only, <insert your name here>. No one, and I mean no one, can be you. So go be the best you that you envision. Simone and Michael haven't let anything stop them. Why should you?
