Living in an RV and visiting new places daily has shown me some interesting things about routines and myself. I think we are hardwired to want routines. They give us a sense of security, purpose, safety, and a feeling of home.
In just a few short weeks, I’m amazed at how we’ve created new routines for our little RV existence. Because we are exploring new places all the time, there is no routine for that, but the morning and evening routines bookend our day.
It’s almost like if we didn’t have them, life would be chaotic and haphazard. So we create them.
By not doing the same thing every day, we are strengthening our exploration muscles. Should we hike this trail in the morning or afternoon? Sleep in today or not? Go somewhere for Internet access or wait until tomorrow?
Routines are comforting but we need to get out of them sometimes too. Because it’s outside of our routines where opportunities lie. Like the hike we almost didn’t take but went on and had amazing views of Lake Tahoe. Or the bike trails we found behind a neighborhood with a tough uphill climb and a crazy technical narrow winding path down. We would have never found them if we hadn’t stepped out of a routine.
There’s great stuff out there waiting for you. I promise. But you won’t find it doing the same daily routine. That I know.
