At a recent Toastmaster’s meeting, the Table Topics Master went around the room asking people what they would do if they knew they had only a certain amount of time left to live. One person was given one year, another one week, when he got to me, he said,
“Susan, you are on an airplane that has just lost both wings, you have 60 seconds to live. What is going through your mind”?
I stood up, and with tears welling in my eyes, I said,
I didn’t even think about trying to grab my phone to call anyone to tell them how much I loved them or what they meant to me. There was not time.
I talked about how grateful I was for the life I’ve lived. That I was loved by so many people and how many people I was fortunate to love. How much fullness and richness I’ve had through the various places I’ve traveled, people I’ve met, and experiences I’ve enjoyed.
How grateful I was to live in a time and a place where opportunity is there for me to grab at any moment.
I was humbled talking about all of this. And oh so grateful.
I was reminded of this again as my boyfriend and three of our dogs backpacked through the Clearwater Mountains in Interior Alaska this past weekend. The sheer beauty of those mountains and the colors of the fall foliage was just breathtaking.
I live in a magical place, Alaska.
The most magical part of all is that I’m grateful for it.
Did you know that the more grateful you are for what you have in your life, the universe can only send you more things to be grateful for?
That’s how energy works. You put the good stuff out; you get the good stuff back.

Try your own “Gratitude Practice” for one week.
Every morning when you wake up, think of three things you are grateful for before you get out of bed. Do the same before you go to sleep each night. Try to think of something new each time that you didn’t think of before. That will be 42 “things” to be grateful for in 7 days.
Then I invite you to "notice" what happens next. Magic is not uncommon.
