To listen to the audio version of this blog, click here. Last week I spoke about Revamping Your New Year’s Resolutions, if you had them. It was all about looking deeper into ‘why’ we want the changes we want.
Today I want to look at picking a word or phrase for the year.
This is fairly new to me. It’s only been in the last couple of years that I’ve picked a word to represent a change I want to make in my life, or a direction in which I want to go. Those of us who are personal growth junkies love this kind of stuff. It helps us stay present, focused, and aware of where we are in our lives. What’s working. What isn’t. Am I acting in accordance with what I say I value? If not, what’s stopping me?
Just thinking about looking at these things in my life makes me giddy.
I’ll let you in on a secret. My word/phrase for 2012 was ’let go’. I looked at my life overall and realized there were some beliefs and habits I had that weren’t serving me anymore. So I did the best I could do let go of what wasn’t in my best interest. It’s a process. I haven’t let go of all I’d like, but I’m a work in progress. Aren’t we all?
Here’s the process I used to help me gain clarity on my word for 2013 and the overall direction I want my life to go this next year.
It’s obviously my own process but feel free to steal it and use any variation that might work for you.
- I find a quiet space at home or in nature.
- I light a candle (if I’m inside), sit comfortably, and close my eyes
- I take several long, slow deep breaths focusing on just my breathing while my brain slowly quiets down from all it’s chatter. Then I ask my internal wisdom (that small, still voice inside that always knows what I need) various questions. Things like, what do I want? What do I need? What would help me grow? What needs to change? Where should I focus? You can ask anything that feels right to you.
- Then I sit and breathe. Wait. And listen.
Sometimes the answer comes right away. Sometimes it’s later in the day. Sometimes later in the week. But if my intention is to truly grow and discover my direction, the answer will come.
Occasionally, it will fly into my brain as an aha or insight. At times I’ll read something soon after that peaks my interest and lets me know, that’s it. Or I’ll dream about what I need. Be open to whatever comes.
Your internal wisdom works in its own time and its own way.
My word for 2013?
There is not enough space here to explain all that this means to me, but let me say that I recognized I needed to more fully show up in certain areas of my life where I feel like I have not. I feel both the desire and need to do so now.
Though I know it will be challenging, because change always is, it feels good, freeing, and the exact direction I need to go.
I invite you to try this process if you are so inclined. You might just be amazed at what your inner guidance has to say.
I know I always am. And if you’re a personal growth junkie like me (or not), glad to have you here.
